How it works
Simple and instant
Type or paste your post
Enter your tweet or long-form post in the text area. The character counter updates live using X's weighted rules: URLs count as 23, every emoji counts as 2, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2.
Switch to Thread mode for long posts
Click 'Thread splitter' to split a long post into a numbered thread. Choose a numbering style (none, 1/N, or 🧵) and toggle X Premium if you have a 25,000-character limit. The splitter never cuts inside a URL.
Copy and publish
Use 'Copy' to grab individual tweets, or 'Copy all' to get the full thread separated by dividers. Paste directly into X's composer. No account or browser extension needed.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How does X's character counting work?
X uses a weighted character counting system. Letters in most alphabets, numbers and everyday punctuation count as 1. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, and so do symbols like …, € and arrows. URLs (http and https) are always shortened to t.co links and count as exactly 23 characters regardless of their real length. Every emoji counts as 2, including combined ones like the family 👨👩👧, flags and skin tones.
What is the X Premium character limit?
Standard X accounts can post up to 280 weighted characters per tweet. X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters per tweet. Toggle the 'X Premium' switch in the tool to check your post against the higher limit.
How does the thread splitter decide where to split?
The splitter uses a priority order: it first tries to split at a paragraph break (blank line), then at the end of a sentence (period, exclamation, or question mark followed by a space), then at a word boundary (any whitespace). If a run contains no whitespace at all, it falls back to a character-level cut. URLs are never split: if a URL would straddle the character limit the splitter backs up to the character before the URL.
What does the numbering do to my character budget?
Numbering adds text to each tweet (for example ' 1/5' or '🧵 '), which reduces the space available for your content. The tool accounts for this automatically: the budget is reduced by the maximum suffix length before splitting, so every segment fits within the limit including the numbering.
Can I use this tool with X Premium's 25,000-character limit?
Yes. Toggle 'X Premium' on in either tab to switch from the 280-character limit to 25,000. In thread mode this means very long posts will produce fewer, longer segments.
Why does a URL that's much longer than 23 characters only count as 23?
X automatically shortens all http and https links to t.co URLs, which are always 23 characters long. The original URL length doesn't matter: a short link and a long link consume the same character budget.
What are best practices for writing X threads?
Start the first tweet with a hook that stands alone: readers see it without the rest of the thread. Keep each tweet self-contained where possible so it's shareable on its own. Use paragraph breaks to signal natural split points. Number your tweets (1/N style) so readers know how long the thread is. End with a call to action: repost, follow, or comment.
Is this tool free?
