FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why is my character count different from text length?
X doesn't count characters the way a basic string length does. It uses a weighted system: every URL (http:// or https://) is replaced by a 23-character t.co link regardless of the real URL length, every emoji counts as 2, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, and so do symbols like β¦ and β¬, while letters in most alphabets, numbers and everyday punctuation count as 1. So a post with a long URL might count far fewer characters than you'd expect, while a post in Chinese or full of emoji counts more.
How do URLs count on X?
X automatically wraps all http:// and https:// URLs in a t.co short link that is always 23 characters, regardless of how long the original URL is. Whether you paste a 10-character URL or a 200-character one, it counts as exactly 23. Bare domains without a scheme (e.g. postopus.com) are not shortened and count normally.
How do emoji count on X?
Every emoji counts as 2 characters on X. That includes combined emoji: a family like π¨βπ©βπ§ is several emoji joined together, but X counts it as one emoji, so 2, not 8. Flags, keycaps like 1οΈβ£ and emoji with a skin tone also count as 2. On a standard account that means at most 140 emoji in one post.
How do CJK characters count on X?
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters (including Hiragana, Katakana, Hangul Jamo, Hangul Syllables, and CJK Unified Ideographs) each count as 2 characters. This matches X's official weighted character counting specification. If you write in these languages, your effective limit is 140 ideographs on a standard account.
What is the X Premium character limit?
X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) subscribers can write posts up to 25,000 characters. Toggle the Premium switch in the counter to check your text against this limit. Standard accounts are limited to 280 weighted characters.
Why does the counter say I'm over the limit when X's website says I'm not?
The most common reason is URLs. X's own editor applies t.co collapsing in real time, so a long URL looks shorter in the compose box than it does in a raw character count. This counter also applies t.co collapsing: any http:// or https:// URL is counted as 23 characters. If you're still seeing a discrepancy, check for invisible characters or combining marks pasted from other apps.
