How it works

Simple and instant

  1. Paste your caption

Drop in the full post text, hashtags and all. The counter parses it live, so you don't need to separate the tags out first.

  2. Read the breakdown

See the total, the unique count, how many duplicates you used, and any broken hashtags (a '#' followed by a space or punctuation).

  3. Match the platform norm

Check the verdict table against each platform's own guidance: X recommends no more than 2 hashtags, LinkedIn no more than 3, and Instagram allows up to 5. Trim tags until every row reads On target.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many hashtags should I use on each platform?

Each platform says so itself. X's Help Center recommends no more than 2 hashtags per post as best practice, though you can use more. LinkedIn's own blog suggests no more than 3 per post so it doesn't look cluttered. Instagram's Help Centre says you can use up to 5 hashtags on a post. This tool shows a verdict for each platform based on your unique count. The sources are listed below these questions.

What counts as a broken hashtag?

A broken hashtag is a '#' that isn't immediately followed by letters, numbers, or an underscore: for example '# marketing' (space after the hash) or '#!'. Platforms won't turn these into clickable tags. The counter flags them so you can fix the spacing or remove the stray '#'.

Does the counter remove duplicate hashtags?

It counts both. The total includes every hashtag occurrence, while the unique count deduplicates case-insensitively, so #Marketing and #marketing are treated as the same tag. The Duplicates figure is the difference, so you can spot accidental repeats before posting.

Do hashtags count toward the character limit?

Yes. Hashtags are part of your caption and count toward the character limit on every platform. If you're tight on space, use the Social Media Character Counter alongside this tool to see how much room your tags take up.

Can hashtags contain spaces or emoji?

No. A hashtag ends at the first space or most punctuation, so '#social media' is read as the tag '#social' followed by the word 'media'. Hashtags can contain letters (including many non-Latin scripts), numbers, and underscores, but not spaces, hyphens, or emoji.
