The assembled URL updates live. Hit Copy and paste it into your post, ad, or email: your analytics tool will attribute the traffic to this campaign.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a UTM parameter?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags you add to a URL's query string so analytics tools like Google Analytics can attribute incoming traffic to a specific source, channel, and campaign. A tagged link looks like https://example.com/?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=launch.

Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign are the three essentials: most analytics setups expect all three for a link to be attributed correctly. utm_term and utm_content are optional and typically used for paid search keywords and A/B-testing variants of the same link.

What does each UTM parameter mean?

utm_source is where the traffic comes from (e.g. linkedin, newsletter). utm_medium is the marketing channel (e.g. social, email, cpc). utm_campaign is the specific promotion (e.g. spring_launch). utm_term holds paid-search keywords. utm_content differentiates two links that point to the same URL, such as two CTAs in one post.

Does this tool send my URL anywhere?

No. The UTM builder runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded or logged. The URL is assembled locally with JavaScript, so you can safely use it for internal or unreleased links.

How should I format UTM values?

Use lowercase and be consistent: utm_source=LinkedIn and utm_source=linkedin are counted as two different sources by most analytics tools. Avoid spaces where you can; this builder encodes them for you (a space becomes '+' or %20), but hyphens or underscores read more cleanly in reports.
