Verification
A platform badge indicating an account's identity has been confirmed, historically for notable figures, now often part of paid subscriptions.
Verification is a badge (usually a checkmark next to an account's name) that a platform grants to signal something about the account's identity or standing. It sits beside the profile name across feeds, replies, and search, acting as a quick trust cue.
The meaning of the badge has shifted significantly. In the original model, verification was a scarce, editorial signal: platforms hand-picked notable public figures, journalists, brands, and organizations, and the checkmark meant "we've confirmed this is genuinely who they claim to be." Its main job was preventing impersonation of high-profile accounts.
More recently, several platforms folded verification into paid subscriptions. On X, for instance, the blue checkmark became part of X Premium, available to any subscriber rather than reserved for notable accounts. This changed what the badge communicates: it now often signals "this person pays for the subscription" as much as "this identity is confirmed." Some platforms layer in additional tiers or colors to distinguish organizations, governments, or genuinely notable individuals.
For creators, the practical questions are what a badge actually gets you and whether it's worth it. Paid verification frequently bundles perks beyond the checkmark: greater reach or reply prominence via the algorithm, longer posts, editing, and analytics. Whether that bundle justifies the cost depends on how central the platform is to your work. The badge alone confers less prestige than it once did, but the accompanying feature set can still be worthwhile for active creators who live on the platform.
