How Bluesky Counts Characters

  • 300The most one post can hold, counted in graphemes, which are the characters a reader sees on screen.
  • Γ—1Every emoji, including combined ones like the family πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§, flags and skin tones. X counts each of these as 2.
  • Γ—1Every letter, number and punctuation mark, and every Chinese, Japanese or Korean character.
  • URLA link counts every character of its address, the same as any other text in the post.

How it works

Simple and instant

  1. Paste or Type Your Post

Enter your text in the box above. The count updates as you type, in graphemes, the unit Bluesky's 300 limit is counted in.

  2. Read What Is Left of 300

The ring and the bar turn amber in the last 20 characters and red past 300. One Bluesky post holds at most 300, so trim until the count is 300 or less.

  3. Copy or Split Into a Thread

Hit Copy to grab the text for Bluesky. If it runs long, the Bluesky Post Preview splits it into a thread of posts that each fit.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What Is the Bluesky Character Limit?

300 characters per post. Bluesky's developer docs give the exact unit as 300 Unicode grapheme clusters, the characters a reader sees on screen. This counter checks your text against that limit.

How Do Emoji Count on Bluesky?

Every emoji counts as 1, because Bluesky counts graphemes. That includes combined emoji. A family like πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ is several emoji joined together, but a reader sees one character, so it counts as 1. Flags and emoji with a skin tone count as 1 too. On X, every emoji counts as 2.

Do Chinese, Japanese and Korean Characters Count as 2?

Not on Bluesky. Each one is a single grapheme, so it counts as 1, like any letter. X counts them as 2, which is why the same text can fit on Bluesky and run over on X.

How Do Links Count on Bluesky?

A link is part of the post text, so every character of its address counts, the same as any other text. Unlike on X, where every link counts as 23, a long address takes more of your 300.

Does Each Post in a Thread Get 300?

Yes. On Bluesky a reply is a post like any other, with a reference to the post it answers, so each post in a thread has its own 300 graphemes. To say more than 300 allows, split the text across a thread.

Is This Counter Free?

Yes. No account, no sign-up and no credit card. The counter runs entirely in your browser.
